Dozens of people gathered at the Diamond Aces Flying Club runway this weekend to watch and participate in their annual fun fly.
The small remote control planes took off, did tricks and sometimes crashed in front of a live audience. Diamond Ace’s president Heather Hiebert says it was a family friendly event that attracted people from all over.
“It is an event for all the clubs in the surrounding area; we get together and just have a day of flying. There is a little bit of competition flying in the afternoon. We also have a barbeque, so it’s just a good day to bring people out”.
Hiebert says it’s a great opportunity for “pilots” to show off their skills in front of other enthusiasts or even just their planes.
Vice President Myron Penner says it’s a hobby that brings people with a specific common interest together. He says for him it’s the comradery that is important and he likes meeting new people at events like the fun fly. On Saturday they had people bring their planes from as far away as Macgregor and Kenora.
The highlight of the annual fun fly is the candy toss but it’s not your regular piñata or hand out. Instead a giant airplane named “the beast” takes off with a bucket full of treats then once high in the air it flips around causing the bucket and the candy to make its way to the ground.
